Why John Edwards Must Endorse Barack Obama

When former senator John Edwards announced his candidacy for president on December 29th, 2006, he was asked by the press how he would dispel the notion that senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are the Democratic front-runners. Rather than take an early shot at his competitors, Edwards’ response range with a tinge of populism that would become a central focus of his campaign. He said: “The change I want to see happen… has nothing to do with the candidates. It has to do with getting Americans involved and engaged in changing their own country.”

The “L” Word

When it comes to Republican presidential politics, there is no harsher word to use when describing your opponent than the “L” word – liberal. In a recent ad, former Massachusetts Governor and occasional front-runner Mitt Romney described Arizona senator and pseudo front-runner John McCain’s positions on energy, immigration, and campaign finance reform as “liberal.” (more…)

Huckabee a Potential Spoiler in Florida

Senator John McCain has targeted much of his campaign toward military veterans and their families, as well as to moderate Republicans and independents. However, in tomorrow’s election in Florida, his fate may rest in the comparative success of one of his opponents. McCain’s chief rival in Florida, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, has focused a good deal of attention on winning at least a modest amount of support among evangelical Christians. About 25% of Florida Republican voters are evangelicals, far from the 60% evangelical turnout that propelled former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee to an early win in the Iowa Caucus. The question for McCain now becomes whether Huckabee, a former Baptist minister, can win enough of the evangelical vote to give McCain a narrow victory over Romney.

Does Obama Have the Momentum?

By all accounts Barack Obama is on a roll. He slaughtered Hillary Clinton in South Carolina on Saturday, beating her by more votes than she received (55% to 27%). He won every income category and every county except two. It was a rout. And now Caroline Kennedy (JFK’s daughter) has endorsed him in a New York Times op-ed titled “A President Like My Father.” This powerful op-ed will certainly help Obama by allowing the Kennedy comparisons to have more merit. But even more important, today Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) endorsed Obama throwing the weight of the most powerful Democratic Senator behind Obama. (more…)
